OBSERVATIONS ON SUICIDE

"Suicide is a serious thing and if you know anyone who is suicidal, you need to get them help. Everyone should love themselves."
                                    Gerard Way

Some words from Jennifer M. Hecht taken from her essay, Stay, that appeared in the Boston Sunday Globe about 5 years ago. It was written in response to the suicides of two of her closest friends.

"Don't kill yourself! Life has always been almost too hard to bear. But it isn't too hard to bear, it's only almost too hard to bear...You have to Stay...don't kill yourself! We need you with us, you are our hero. Stay!"

To which I add my words: Remember Ms. Hecht's word, Stay. If you are thinking of suicide, Stay - your family and friends need you and depend upon you. If you are planning to commit suicide, Stay - your family and friends love you and care for you. You bring joy and happiness to more people than you realize. Stay!

So, just Stay one more day. When tomorrow comes, Stay one more day. Please Stay one more day and the day will arrive when the light will silently come through the darkness, hope will slowly spring from the depression. Stay and the world around you will gradually change from black and white to a beautiful bouquet of bright colors - the sun will shine and you'll be happy you stayed. Please Stay!

Think! Think of those you love, for you do love. Think of those who love you, for you are loved

When my grandfather killed himself when I was 11 years old, I saw him that morning and I told him I would see him after school. I had dreams. Dreams of being with him that afternoon and evening. Dreams of the days and years ahead, dreams of joy and happiness with him. Instead in an instant my life changed, my heart shattered and all my dreams broken - in an instant.

Some time ago I read these words: "A person thinking of suicide is perfectly capable of feigning an interest in a future they have no intention of inhabiting."

On his grandfather's suicide: "He thought he was doing it to relieve the burden on all of us. Instead, he gave us a burden for the rest of our lives."  Bruce Feiler - Council of Dads

Suicide: you think you want death when all you want is change. - author unknown

Suicide does not end the chances of life getting worse. Suicide eliminates the possibility of it ever getting better.  A posting on Postsecret

"Suicide is an event of human nature which whatever may be said and done with respect to it, demands the sympathy of every man."  Goethe

Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, surrounded by assholes. -  author unknown

No matter how dark the hour or moment, hope and love are always possible.  author unknown

No matter how far wrong you've gone, you can always turn around. -  a posting on Postsecret

"Suicide is a decision certain people have taken on early in their lives. They may not know it but it's in them. Then one day, something comes along that triggers it. Can be totally trivial, can be drastic. But the intention was always there. And the results the same."
John LeCarre - A Legacy of Spies

Albert Camus:"There is only one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide." So, what's being done to prevent it?

Suicide is death by sadness and it is silent - but it leaves loved ones with wounds that never heal.
